Topics covered include: prokaryotic cell structure and function; microbial growth, factors affecting growth, and control of growth; microbial metabolism; prokaryotic genetics and gene regulation; microbial classification and diversity; and, viruses. Specific skills learned in the laboratory include: sterile technique, bacterial culture, microscopy and staining, serial dilution, bacterial metabolism, fecal coliform testing, and antimicrobial agents in the control of microbial growth.
