General Admissions

To be considered for general admission:
- An applicant must have graduated from secondary school, or equivalent or be a minimum of 18 years of age or older within the calendar year in which they are applying to study and must also meet the program admission requirements.
- An applicant must be a Canadian citizen or provide the following documentation, as applicable, as part of their application:
- Proof of permanent resident status
- Proof of convention refugee status
- Proof of permission to study in Canada as an international student
- The Office of the Registrar will provide an alternative application process for applicants who don’t meet above age or secondary school requirements. Contact Student Services for the Underage Admission process.
Dual credit is an early entry opportunity for high school students to complete university-level courses while still in high-school. Students receive course credit towards their high school graduation and retain the course credit at the post-secondary level.
Students are approved by their high school through the dual credit application process. Contact your high school counsellor for the most current offerings and application process.
YOUTH TRAIN IN TRADES is the technical training component of a trade apprenticeship for high school students and is an Industry Training Authority (ITA) youth initiative . Successful completion of a YOUTH TRAIN IN TRADES program will give credit for at least level one technical training (in-class) component of your Industry Training Program and because it is a ‘dual credit’ program students also receive secondary school graduation credits.
Students are approved by their high school through the dual credit Youth Train in Trades application process. Contact your high school counsellor for the most current offerings and application process.
NIC’s partnership with the Department of National Defence provides Canadian Forces members and their dependents access to support and services to achieve post-secondary success.
Our advisor will review your military training to assess your eligibility for credit toward NIC certificate/diploma or associate degree requirements. For more information contact NIC’s educational/military advisor at military@nic.bc.ca
- Be 18 years of age or older within the calendar year in which they are applying to study.
- Meet the English language requirement. English language proficiency results must be taken within the last two years.
- BC English 12 or BC English First Peoples 12 with a minimum grade of C; or
- Or one of the following:
- Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 (no band lower than 5.5). Students who do not have a band score of IELTS 6.0 or higher in Reading and Writing will be required to take English 104.
- TOEFL ibt 80 overall with no subsection less than 19
- TOEFL 550 (Code 8538)
- CAEL 60 and writing 60
- PTE Academic 54 overall with no component less than 46
- Duolingo English Test 105 taken after January 2020 (re-test score within 3 weeks between each testing is NOT accepted); or
- Equivalency as determined by North Island College Admissions Department
- Meet other academic and admission requirements for your chosen program.
