Learn More About Employment Transition Kitchen Assistant


The Employment Transition Kitchen Assistant program is a supportive program that teaches students essential employability and kitchen skills for work in the food service industry. Students participate in employability courses that teach behaviors that lead to successful access to, and retention of, employment. The targeted skills courses in the kitchen provide industry relevant training.

This program also provides an opportunity to gain certificates relevant to the food service field including FoodSafe Level 1, Serving It Right, First Aid, Worker Safety, and WHMIS.  A career exploration /job shadow and a supported 4 work experience placement where students can practice skills in a professional kitchen environment are included in the program.

To Be Successful

Students must successfully complete all courses. 

Students should have an interest and motivation to participate in learning about the world of work, specifically the food service industry. They must be able to work independently and follow instructions in a group setting in the kitchen and classroom. As well, they must be able to arrange transportation to and from classes and work experience placement.

Career Opportunities

Depending on your skills, you may exit to competitive employment, supported work, volunteer positions or further specific skills training. Types of employment will range according to your ability, interests and the local labour market, but may include kitchen assistant or prep cook assistant.
