Indigenous Language Fluency Certificate

Explore Indigenous language through this unique certificate program. You’ll draw on local Indigenous knowledge systems, ways of knowing and protocols through experiential and land-based learning to explore the values and beliefs encoded in Indigenous language. This cohort-based program will help you to unearth the understanding of how language forms the foundation of all Indigenous relationships.

Admission Requirements

Before Classes Begin:
Students will complete a required orientation session prior to the start of their first semester. The orientation includes cultural safety, as well as, preparation for immersion and distinct team-building exercises.
Completion Requirements
- This is a 10 month cohort. A student will have up to three years to complete the program. If a student exits the program, and re-applies for entry, a language fluency assessment is required, and the student may be required to repeat courses depending on the results of the assessment.
- A minimum of 75% of the program must be completed at North Island College.
Kwak’wala Option
- Student must achieve a B in all immersion language courses (ILF 101, ILF 102, ILF 103, ILF 104, ILF 105, ILF 106)
- completion of ILF 108, ILF 110, ILF 111, and ILF 112
- and pass in ILF 109.
Nuu-chah-nulth Option
- Student must achieve a B in all immersion language courses (ILF 121, ILF 122, ILF 123, ILF 124, ILF 125, ILF 126)
- completion of ILF 128, ILF 110, ILF 111, and ILF 112
- and pass in ILF 129.
Ayajuthem Option
- Student must achieve a B in all immersion language courses (ILF 131, ILF 132, ILF 133, ILF 134, ILF 135, ILF 136)
- completion of ILF 138, ILF 110, ILF 111, and ILF 112
- and pass in ILF 139.
