CMH - 180 Clinical Practice I for CMHW’s

This course introduces the students to the mental health clinical practice setting. Learning opportunities will encourage students to use the CMHW concepts and therapeutic communication skills learned thus far in the program to assist individuals with mental health issues to maximize their independence. Students will identify the resources available in the community and methods for accessing these. Emphasis will be on the role of the CMHW as a member of the community health team. The principles of Recovery using Psychosocial Rehabilitation will be the focus of this workplace practice.

Prerequisite(s):
  • C+ in CMH 165, CMH 170, and CMH 175, and a Pass in CMH 160
  • Standard First Aid and CPR Level C-certificate
  • Non-Violence Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Certificate. The de-escalation physical techniques, taught in a face-to-face format needs to be part of the training if the practice placement is situated in a high-risk area*. 
    *High-risk areas are: Correctional Health Services, Emergency Departments, Home and Community Care, Long Term Care, Mental Health and Substance Use, In-Patient Psychiatry, Neurology, Brain Injury, Paramedics, Protection Services.
  • Criminal Record Check form, which will be sent to you by Admissions once you are offered a seat in the program.
  • Completed immunization form. This form should be validated by the public health nurse at your local health unit and must be presented to the Health Care Assistant program faculty on the first day of practicum. Note: If the public health nurse recommends a rubella serologic test, a photocopy of the results of this test will also have to be submitted.
