Priority Admission
Aboriginal Student Lounges
Elders in Residence are an important part of NIC’s college community. They support Aboriginal students enrolled in courses and programs at the college and act as liaisons with First Nations communities. They’re also available to staff and students interested in Aboriginal culture or in need of guidance. Elders participate in classes, take leadership roles in ceremonial matters, and provide curriculum support. All students are welcome to consult the Elders in Residence for support and guidance. If you live outside Campbell River, Port Alberni, Port Hardy and the Comox Valley and would like to connect with an Elder, please contact an Aboriginal advisor for more information.
Aboriginal educational advisors are available to assist students in developing educational plans, liaise with instructors, or contact Aboriginal sponsorship organizations. Having registered status is not a requirement to meet with an advisor. Campus orientation tours can be provided, and each advisor has an open door, drop-in policy. If you live outside Campbell River, Port Alberni, Port Hardy and the Comox Valley and would like to speak to an Aboriginal advisor, please call 1-800-715-0914.
Students with Aboriginal ancestry may be eligible for a priority seat in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and Practical Nursing diploma, as well as Early Childhood Education, Human Services, and Health Care Assistant programs. Applicants will be considered on a first-applied, first-qualified basis for all programs with the exception of Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree, where a selective admission process will be used.
When there are more qualified applicants than seats, remaining priority admission applicants will be considered as part of the regular admission process. Or, the applicant may apply for priority admission again the following year. Please note seating is limited and all unused priority admission seats will be returned to the general application pool no later than the final payment deadline or 30 days prior to the program start date, whichever comes first.
To be considered for a priority admission seat, Aboriginal students must:
- Self-identify as an Aboriginal person on their application for admission
- Meet NIC’s general admission requirements, and/or specific program requirements
Any applicant to NIC who self-identifies as Aboriginal will receive information on priority admission. Any Aboriginal student or person interested in more information may also contact an Aboriginal education advisor at their local campus.
Please note that the Indigenous student lounges are closed due to Covid-19, and the Elders and Advisors are holding digital Indigneous Student lounge drop-in sessions on Tuesdays 11 am - 12 noon and Wednesdays 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm starting October 6, 2020.
Aboriginal student lounges are a place for Aboriginal students to connect with each other, Elders and advisors. Coffee, tea, and snacks are provided, along with computer access and work tables. Drop in to plan an event, study, or discuss your education and career goals with an advisor.
