International Students


NIC’s Office of Global Engagement works with students, faculty and staff in learning outside of their current cultural content and developing skills for global success. Each year, hundreds of students from countries around the world choose to make Vancouver Island their home away from home.  The following is a list of the English admission requirements for international students and a list of programs available.

Undergraduate Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

  1. Be 18 years of age or older within the calendar year in which they are applying to study. 
  2. Meet the English language requirement.   English language proficiency results must be taken within the last two years.
    • BC English 12 or BC English First Peoples 12 with a minimum grade of C; or
    • Or one of the following:
    • Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 (no band lower than 5.5). Students who do not have a band score of IELTS 6.0 or higher in Reading and Writing will be required to take English 104.
    • TOEFL ibt 80 overall with no subsection less than 19
    • TOEFL 550 (Code 8538)
    • CAEL 60 and writing 60
    • PTE Academic 54 overall with no component less than 46
    • Duolingo English Test 105 taken after January 2020 (re-test score within 3 weeks between each testing is NOT accepted); or
    • Equivalency as determined by North Island College Admissions Department
  3. Meet other academic and admission requirements for your chosen program.

Post-Graduate Diploma Programs

Submit official English language proficiency results (within the last two years) which meets one of the following minimum standards:

  • Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 (no band lower than 5.5). Students who do not have a band score of IELTS 6.0 or higher in Reading and Writing will be required to take English 104

Graduates from an accredited diploma or degree program from a recognized college or university where English was the medium of instruction, and English is an official language of the country, are also accepted as meeting the International Language Requirement. Those countries include:
